memo to laura bush

Dear Mrs. Bush,

While I'm not a fan of your husband's administration, I kinda like you and so I did watch your speech at the GOP convention last night. I enjoyed the part of your speech when you talked about the anniversary U.S. Women's Right to Vote. Indeed an important milestone in American history. But to be fair, you did leave out some rather important facts regarding women and voting--especially where the GOP are concerned.

Did you know that Utah was the first state to grant voting rights to women--a full 50 years before the rest of the nation? Did you know that Utah women enjoyed voting rights until the Federal government--specifically Republicans--took that right away as a condition for statehood?

So let the Bush team take the glory for empowering Afgani women with the right to vote. But I have an inkling that, like the women in Utah, their voting rights won't last. When you think about it, isn't it all kind of ironic?

And while there are alot of things in Utah that are totally wacked, I'm proud that my adopted state was a pioneer in supporting the women's right to vote.

Have fun in NYC,

DB
