Last Friday morning I received a phone call that my Aunt Emily was being admitted to the hospital with a possible brain aneurysm. I threw my camera, a sweatshirt, along with Biz Stone's book on blogging (which I've been meaning to read for months) into my slingpack and made the long drive out to Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage.
By time I arrived at Eisenhower she was already having a myriad of tests to determine her condition. While she was in surgery, I took a quick walk around the medical campus and took some photos. The grounds of the Eisenhower Medical Center are beautiful; almost like being in a botanical garden, with various cacti, blooming desert plants, and a massive duck pond. It was a nice break from the tension, and uncertainty in the waitng room.
In the end the doctors discovered that it wasn't an aneurysm, but rather a leaky varicose vein in her brain. Needless to say, we were very relieved. So, despite the roller coaster of emotions it turned out well.
As I began the long drive home, I reflected on the day. It was a timely reminder that people, not things, politics, or the day-to-day stresses of life are the most important things in life. And even when stressful, unpleasant things are going on, you can be surrounded by beauty. It's so easy to lose perspective and let the little things get you down.
Fortunately, this lesson was still fresh in my mind when I woke up Sunday morning with a nasty cold. It's just a cold, and on the bright side I finally had time to sit back and read that book.
